Edit the subject constraints by class
Subject constraints should be defined in accordance with your institution's pedagogical project; they establish a relationship between Subject A and Subject B (incompatibility during a given period, prohibited order of succession, conversely, indispensable, etc.). When a constraint applies to courses in the same subject (for example, a limit on the number of course hours per day), that same subject is designated as both Subject A and Subject B.
- Go to the display Timetable > Classes > Subject constraints.
- Select a class.
- On the right, all existing constraints for this class are displayed. By default, there is one constraint for each subject: students must not have the same subject twice on the same day.
- You can authorize courses in the same subject by double-clicking the red cross and, if necessary, set a less restrictive constraint by limiting the incompatibility to half a day or by setting a maximum number of hours.
- You can also add a constraint between two subjects. To do this, click on the line Add a constraint.
- In the pop-up window, select the first subject, then click on Validate.
- In the pop-up window, select the second subject, then click on Validate.
- The two subjects are displayed in the list (usually sorted alphabetically), and you can:
- force spacing between two courses by entering incompatibilities for 1/2 days, 1 day, 2 days, or a certain number of half-days;
- prevent two courses from occurring consecutively by paying attention to the order of subjects A/B;
- impose that one course take place before another by setting a weekly order;
- impose that group courses take place before or after whole-class courses by imposing a weekly order;
- impose that two courses in the same subject never be spaced more than half a day or one day apart.
For automatic placement of courses to be possible, it is essential that you enter only your true constraints. This is because, during automatic placement, EDT will respect all defined constraints. During manual placement, you will be notified if a defined constraint is not met, but you can choose to override it.
Advice
To work by subject and apply the same constraint to an entire series of classes, go to the display Timetable > Subjects > Subject constraints.
