Enter constraints on a course-by-course basis
-
Course-specific constraints allow for a more precise reflection of certain pedagogical and equipment-related constraints than subject-specific constraints. These constraints can be lifted when resolving failures.
- Go to the display Timetable > Course > Course to course constraints.
- From the list, select the courses you want to link, then click on Add a constraint.
- In the pop-up window, select the type of constraint to apply:
- Enforce the placement of selected courses the same two-week period/half-day/full day/custom number of half-days
For example, to group laboratory classes into a half-day to make it easier to prepare the lab rooms, or to group certain courses on the same day so that students at the same level can progress at the same pace through the course program of the week. - Prohibit the placement of selected courses the same two-week period/half-day/full day/custom number of half-days
For example, to prevent students from having the same teacher twice in the same afternoon, even if he/she is teaching them different subjects. - Set the order of the selected classes in the week
For example, to enforce that, for a particular subject, the 1h30 courses are held before the 1h courses during the week. - Prohibit selected courses from being scheduled back-to-back
Make sure the selected courses follow one another
For example, when two teachers want to work on a joint project. This approach is an alternative to designing a complex course.
- Enforce the placement of selected courses the same two-week period/half-day/full day/custom number of half-days
- In the pop-up window, you can optionally enter a label for this constraint.
The box Optional constraint is ticked by default: if the constraint is optional, it will be taken into account during automatic placement but can be lifted when resolving failures (tick Search options > Ignore the optional course-to-course constraints - if the constraint must be strictly adhered to, un-tick this box. - Click on Create: the constraints and associated courses appear in the list.
Note
If you created a constraint of the type Define the order of selected courses within the week you can modify the order of the courses using the button
and
located to the right of the screen.
