  • Can I install EDT Single-user on a MacOS or Linux workstation?

Index Education applications are designed for installation on Microsoft Windows workstations. However, they can also be installed (with the exception of servers) on MacOS or Linux workstations using software such as Wine or CrossOver. The supervisor (SPR or superadministrator) is strongly advised to connect from a workstation running a Microsoft Windows system.

Solution for MacOS only

For users who don't want to install Wine on their own, Index Education offers a package including EDT Single-user + Wine.

Prerequisite:
  • have a recent version of Mac OS (Mac OS 10.11 and later);
  • specify in System preference > Security and confidentiality > Tab General > Authorize the downloaded of applications from: " Anywhere ".

Solution for MacOS and Linux

Prerequisite: you must have at least version 9.0 of Wine, otherwise the software will not launch (libcef.dll fails to load).
Option 1: Installation with Wine

The following commands must be entered in a terminal:

  1. Verifying the Wine version
    wine64 --version This returns, for example, wine 9.0.
  2. Windows version as seen by applications
    wine64 winecfg /v win11
  3. Installation of EDT Single-user
    wine Install_xxx_win64.exe (Specify path if necessary)
  4. Launching of EDT Single-user
    WINEDEBUG=-nls wine64 ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Index\ Education/ .../Client\ EDT.exe
Option 2: Installation with CrossOver
  1. Launch CrossOver.
  2. From the menu Bottle/New bottle create a type of Windows 11 or Windows 10 64-bit bottle.
  3. In the left-hand bar, select the new bottle, then right-click on the button Install an application in the bottle.
  4. Choose Install an unlisted application.
  5. Click on the first button Edit to select the EDT Single User installation program, then click on Install.
Known problems:
  • If you have two screens, there is a problem loading libcef.dll (Chromium Embedded FrameWork) which may prevent the application from launching. In this case, go to the tab Display of the Wine configuration window, tick Emulate a virtual desktop with a desktop size that fits your screen, for example 1600 x 1280.

  • If the screen resolution is too low, the IECefSubProcess.exe process may crash. Try increasing the screen resolution.

    • The HTTP proxy configuration test (menu Assistance > HTTP configuration) causes Wine to crash if an HTTP server requires "Basic" authentication.
Warning
The diversity of Linux distributions and the variety of behavior within the same distribution mean that we can't guarantee optimal operation of our applications on Linux workstations. While we are now able to reproduce all Windows configurations, it is not materially possible to do the same for Linux. What's more, our support team cannot master all distributions and versions. The implementation of our software under Linux is therefore reserved for establishments with the necessary skills on site, and with a good command of their system environment and firewall...
