Optional tests: what rules apply for calculating the average?
Optional tests can be included in the average using two methods:
Method 1: As a bonus
Only points above 10 for optional tests are taken into account when calculating the average for the service or sub-service.
Example
- Average of non-optional tests: (12+16)/2 = 14
- Optional test: 17
The average is calculated by adding the 7 bonus points, giving (12+16+7)/2 = 17.5.
- Optional test: 8
The average is calculated without bonus points, giving (12+16+0)/2 = 14
Method 2: As a grade
Optional tests are taken into account in the service or sub-service average only if they improve the student's average. In order to never disadvantage the student, optional grades are taken into account in descending order.
Examples
- Average of non-optional tests (16+18)/2 = 17
- Optional tests: 18 et 20
The average is calculated using the best optional test, giving (16+18+20)/(2+1) = 18.
We calculate the average again, taking into account the other test, giving (16 +18 +20 +17)/(2+2) = 17,75.
Since the second optional test lowers the average, it will be ignored.
