  Can we replace the colored dots with letters or numbers?

Yes. To replace the colored dots with letters, go to the menu Parameters > Other modules > Competencies and tick the box By the codes A, E, N, NE.

To customize the codes, double-click in the box of the code to modify and enter the new value.
